Whitewashed with winding streets, flower drenched balconies and charming arches throughout, Vejer is a genuinely magical pueblo filled with history, light and kind hospitality from a local population that still enjoys a more traditional Spanish lifestyle.
It is located in the heart of the spectacular and relatively untouched Costa de la Luz (Coast of Light) right between the town of Tarifa to the East and the city of Cadiz to the West. Built along the banks of the Barbate River at just over 200m sea level, this very typical spanish pueblo is home to around 12,000 people with a history that dates back over 1,000 years.
The seasonal calendar is punctuated by numerous local cultural events, refreshingly non commercial and offering wonderful opportunities to experience yet another long weekend.
Almost everything can be found in this cheerful town. There are good schools, a sports centre, a municipal park with play area, banks, internet cafes, good restaurants and bars serving fresh, local produce, supermarkets, a market, taxis and buses and the impressive Cultural Centre to include state of-the-art cinema and theatre, due to open in 2008.
Further afield, the world famous cities of Cadiz, Jerez and Seville are inspiring to visit and the ferry from Tarifa (45 minute drive) provides transport to North Africa in less than 1 hour.
The countryside surrounding Vejer is lush and green with natural parks and the cultural sanctuary, 'Our Lady of the Olive Grove' is close by. In fact, the Santa Lucia Natural Park is only 3km distance and includes an ancient aqueduct and 16th century water mills. The Vejer municipality is also home to 82 hectares of marshland. This forms part of a marine and land reserve called Brena Park, habitat to a multitude of birds, which makes the area ideal for birdwatchers and nature lovers in general. Also to be found in the province is the renowned Alcornales ancient cork forest national park, the mountainous terrain of Grazalema and nearer Seville, the world famous Cota Donana National Park from where you can witness the largest bird emigration flight paths in Europe.
The nearby Playa del Palmar is one of the main features of the Costa de la Luz and is famous for its surfing. Other renowned beaches in the vicinity include Conil, Canos de Meca and Zahara de los Atunes.
Only 10 km separate the breathtaking expanse of gently undulating, sunflower-filled terrain and the glittering turquoise ocean from Casa Los Remedios.
Windsurfers, Kite surfers, sunbathers, nudists, naturists and those who love fishing are all attracted to this lovely, protected area that is touted as one of the last reserves along the Spanish coastline.
